The ADAC International Truck GP at the Nurburgring is the event of the year in the world of truck racing attracting enormous industry support and an audience in excess of 150,000.

Despite the unpredictable Eifel weather, which can be blazing hot one moment and torrential rain the next, the fans camp out en masse for this ‘classic’ event in the truck race calendar. With the action spread over three days the teams arrive mid-week to start setting up their paddock areas and some of the fans are already on-site.

The truck circuit is a shortened 3.629km version of the ‘new’ Ring, which cuts out the Mullenbach section which is used by the F1 cars. This area is actually fenced off for the weekend – and the organisers create a huge stadium in which an enormously popular country & western concert takes place on the Saturday evening.

The event is the one race every top driver is determined to win; with a lot of major sponsors around it’s a shop window for the sport. Of course, this increased pressure for success creates plenty of aggressive manoeuvring for position and it’s fortunate that the Nurburgring features some very large run-off areas.

There are fabulous viewing areas all around the circuit; the favourites being the hairpin turn that creates the ‘short-cut’ from the GP track and the chicane at the back of the track which often catches out newcomers with it’s full-speed approach. But this is one event where it pays to buy your ticket in advance as it’s often a complete sell out.

Race Truck Lap record: Egon Allgauer (MAN) 2m04.190s
Pole position for 2003 race: Lutz Bernau (MAN) 2m.04.214s
2003 winners: Saturday Cup race: Lutz Bernau (MAN) Sunday Cup race: Frankie Vojtisek (Renault)
